20 Ways to Go Green

Savvy Shopping

  • Shop locally at places such as Farmers Market. This saves on fossil fuels used to transport the products to stores.
  • Reuse your water bottles. Drinking filtered water greatly reduces the amount of wasted plastic.
  • Buy in bulk, and avoid individually wrapped products with excessive packaging.
  • Recycle old electronics. Old and broken cell phones, iPods, and batteries should always be recycled properly.

Green Entertainment

  • Unplug all electronics when not in use. Electronics still use small amounts of electricity when plugged in. Unplugging cell phone chargers when not in use reduces this phantom power.
  • Pack a waste-free picnic. Pack lunch boxes with cloth napkins, reusable drink containers, silverware, and Tupperware.
  • Download music instead of buying CDs, and rent movies instead of buying DVDs. Hundreds of thousands of CDs and DVDs are thrown out each month.
  • Read green literature. Expand your knowledge on sustainability with enjoyable ways to save the earth. There are many books out there that will suit anyone's interest.
  • Have a green party that doesn't use any electricity. Light candles, play board games, enjoy a classic game of charades, play cards and socialize.

Print Smart

  • Print files to a PDF document first to catch errors; instead of wasting printer ink and paper.
  • Print on both sides of the paper. This option is called duplex in most printer preferences.
  • Keep a paper recycling bin next to printers. Reusing and recycling paper is an easy habit.
  • Close the loop by purchasing recycled printer paper. There is no noticeable difference between 30% recycled content paper and normal printing paper.
  • Go electronic whenever possible: Utilize Email, flash drives, and the internet to backup and share files.

Around the House

  • Adjust the temperature of the fridge to a lower level that is still safe for storing food.
  • Green your laundry by using eco-friendly detergents. These products are less harmful to you and the environment.
  • Use cold water. Taking colder showers and washing your hands with cold water will save energy.
  • Lower the thermostat. Set the temperature a few degrees higher in the summer and a few degrees cooler during the winter. During nice weather, shut off the A.C. and open up the doors and windows to the beautiful outdoors.
  • Hand dry laundry just like the good old days. Line drying clothes reduces both water and energy consumption.
